Complex circuits need to be produced in multiple layers. In order to accomplish this task, an FR-4 glass epoxy is used as the main insulating substrate to produce most rigid PCBs. During this process, a thin layer of copper foil will be laminated to either 1 or both sides of the FR-4 panels. Circuitry interconnections are then etched into these copper layers in order to produce a complete printed circuit board.

In order to print the legend, there are 3 different available methods:

  • Silk screen printing
  • Liquid photo imaging
  • Ink jet printing

It’s important to note that in addition to other helpful indications, the legend contains the following items:

  • Component designators
  • Switch settings
  • Test points

When these indications are available, it assists with assembling, testing, and servicing circuit boards. This can be beneficial for prototype PCB assembly and other project purposes.

In order to manufacture laminates, layers of cloth or paper are cured under pressure and temperature with thermoset resin. This forms an integral final piece that has a uniform thickness. Laminates can be manufactured in widths and lengths of up to 4 feet by 8 feet.
