A Few Tips for Kiln Users From High Temp Ceramic Coatings to Heating Element Replacements

UPDATED 12/4/2020

Kiln Temperatures and High Temp Ceramic Coatings

Ceramicists and other types of artists use kilns to fire and finish their work. While it does depend on the project and types of materials being used, more than one firing may be needed. This is often the case when adding different layers of glaze to ceramic dishes or pots. When someone is just learning how to work with a kiln, there are some important details to keep in mind.

Kilns can be set at different temperatures to accommodate specific types of projects. When working with ceramic, it’s important to note that it is quite heat resistant. This is one of the reasons why using ITC 100 ceramic coatings can increase a kiln’s efficiency. The average kiln, for instance, can reach temperatures between 1,8000 degrees Fahrenheit to 2,400 degrees Fahrenheit. While ceramic is able to hold up to temperatures of 3,800 degrees Fahrenheit, ITC ceramic coatings can hold up to 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Different Types of Ceramic Coatings

The type of ITC coating to use will depend on the materials being used for the project. There are different types of coatings, each for a specific purpose. Here are just a few examples:

Kiln Heating Elements

A kiln’s heating elements will usually last for 100 firings. When these elements have increased resistance by nine percent, then it’s a good idea to replace them. When pots and other ceramic objects are placed within a kiln, experts recommend that these should be a fair distance away from these elements. The basic recommended distance is 1-1/2 inches away from the elements. If the objects are placed too close, they can explode or otherwise become damaged.

HVAC Installment

Are you a newbie to kilns? Or are you planning on replacing your kiln? As a kiln owner, you will require some basic information on how to operate your kiln and how to care for it to ensure maximum functionality. Before purchasing one, make sure you are aware of the phase and voltage available in your home. This is crucial since it is hard and expensive to change a kiln’s voltage. Also, when installing your kiln, ensure it is placed in a large room and on a non-combustible floor. You can place it on either concrete or ceramic tiles.

Just like any other machine in your home, a Kiln may overheat when working. Some kilns are designed to automatically shut off in case of overheating, which may be inconvenient for you and slow down your operations. To avoid this, you will need to install an AC heating and cooling unit in the room.

For HVAC installation, engage an expert who offers air heating and cooling services to install one for you. The HVAC expert will also give you an estimate of the average cost of new HVAC unit, the average cost of a Trane air conditioner, and average cost of AC unit and installation.

In case your kiln is not operating or has broken down, don’t try to repair it on your own. Invite a kiln expert who is conversant with kiln heating elements to repair it.
