A sales career is one that requires a great deal of dedication, as you need to be able to handle the ups and downs, rejections, and difficulties of dealing with particularly exhausting clients.

You must have ample self-confidence, and learn not to take too many things to heart. Of course, you will want to improve steadily and learn from your mistakes, but you cannot lose self-esteem because of a client’s response, or your boss’s criticism.

Sales recruitment agencies are looking for certain criteria when they search for candidates on behalf of a company. Here is some sales career advice that may up your chances of becoming a top candidate.

  • Experience. This is not to say that you can’t be a great sales rep even if you don’t have much experience, but many companies that are on the lookout for a high quality sales team want to find candidates that have at least a few successful years of sales under their belts. You will want to play up any experience you do have, and also try find as much work as a sales rep before you try to apply to higher end sales jobs.
  • Good Examples. Often times, an interviewer will ask you specific questions about your past experiences of being a sales rep. He or she may even ask you to pitch a product that you had to sell at another job, or explain a situation where you had to deal with a difficult client. You will want at least a handful of examples that highlight your skills ready to go, if you do get these questions. It will make you stand out as a candidate.
  • Good Resume. This may seem obvious, but having a strong resume is one of the best ways of impressing a company before you even step into the interview room. It will give them an idea of what you can offer, and also, a cleanly, concisely-built resume will let them know just how professional you are.
